Somers waited a year to win the game of a lifetime.
The Tuskers defeated Union-Endicott in a rout on Saturday, running away with a 58-21 victory at the JMA Dome in Syracuse in the NYSPHSAA Class A championship — exactly one year after losing a one-point heartbreaker in the final on a failed two-point conversion in the final minute.
“It was 365 days decisions of waiting for a decision that I made that we didn’t wait a state championship,” Somers second-year coach Anthony DeMatteo said. “We were obsessed with getting back here. And we did it.”
Matt Fitzsimons completed 11 of 12 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns. The senior quarterback also ran for a touchdown in the win.
Luke Savino ran for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries for Somers, which capped a 12-0 season with the victory. Ravi Dass added two touchdown catches and sophomore Mason Kelly caught a touchdown and ran for a score in the win.
