Carmel moved one step closer to realizing its destiny.
The unbeaten Rams continued their domination of 2021, rolling over Newburgh Free Academy, 47-13, in the NYSPHSAA Class AA Semifinals at Middletown High School. The Rams advanced to Saturday’s state championship game against Buffalo powerhouse Bennett at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
It’s the first ever state championship game appearance for Carmel and head coach Todd Cayea, who is in his 32nd season.

Dylan Shields ran for three touchdowns for Carmel, which improved to 12-0 on the season. The Rams have outscored their opponents by a 470-69 margin on the year and have not had a game closer than 24 points. They’ve outscored their two state tournament opponents by a 98-20 margin.
