SuperBracketology: The Best Teams of the 2000s in Section 1 boys basketball

Let’s have some fun. Let’s divert our minds for a while. Let’s argue about basketball.

We all need to take our minds off things in this uncertain period of our lives. I got to thinking this week about how disappointing the cancellation of the NYSPHSAA tournament was for the four Section 1 champions that made it to regional finals. And how we’ll never know if any of them would have achieved their ultimate goal of winning a state title.

(Note: I think Greeley and Hamilton were going to win it all)

So in trying to determine where these four teams place in my time covering Section 1 Basketball dating back to 2000, I came up with the concept you saw in the headline: SuperBracketology.

Tonight, I will unveil a 32-team bracket tournament for four classes – Class AA, A, B and a combined C/D – that will include all of the best teams from Section 1 dating back to the 1999-2000 season.

In each class, the 21 Section 1 champs in each of the top three classifications from 2000 through 2020 will receive automatic bids. I have also selected 11 at-large bids from that time period. Every team is seeded and broken into four regions and will compete bracket-style to decide the “Best of the 2000s Champion” in each class.

Thanks to the brilliant website NYSbasketballbracket.com and NewYorkBasketballHistory.com, I have selected the 32 teams and constructed the brackets.

So, we could have a first-round matchup of Fox Lane 2016 vs. Mount Vernon 2001. Or Hamilton 2004 vs. Tuckahoe 2019. Or even Pleasantville 2001 vs. Pleasantville 2009.

Again, tonight I’ll reveal the brackets “Selection Monday” style; posting the automatic and at-large bids, possible play-in games, which teams earned No. 1 seeds, and more.

Call your friends and teammates if you played basketball in the section since 2000. Please share this with them.

I encourage you all to print out the PDFs of the brackets for each class and post them back on twitter with either a #superbracketology hashtag of just @ me at @KDJMedia1.

This could be really fun. And trust me, this won’t be very easy.

The Selection Show for SuperBracketology is coming. Get your pens ready.

  1. Mt. Vernon Boys 03-04 27-3 Public Champions, Federation Champs & finished ranked #7 USA ! Yes, they would have beaten Ben Gordon’s 99-00 team!
