Championship Weekend Rewind: Relive 6 unforgettable Section 1 finals

Six championship basketball games. Five came down to the final possession. The other was a three-point game entering the fourth quarter.

In another year of controversy surrounding the Section 1 Basketball Tournament, the drama on the court drowned it all out.

SECTION 1 CLASS AA BOYS
Mount Vernon 56, Clarkstown South 51

GAME RECAP
Top seed Mount Vernon secured its 17th Section 1 title in 20 years and third in a row with a heart-pounding victory. The Vikings had two potential game-tying 3-point shots miss in the final 10 seconds before Charles Lovett sealed the victory with a pair of free throws. Lovett led the Knights with 23 points, including four 3-pointers. Troy Hupstead added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Giordano put up 18 points and nine rebounds for Clarkstown South, Jack Tucek had 14 points and five assists and Tony Hastings had 10 points and four boards.

Poughkeepsie 47, Tappan Zee 42

GAME RECAP
First-year Poughkeepsie coach Cody Moffett led the program to a Section 1 title after surviving a 3-point attempt in the final 5 seconds. TZ rallied to tied the game at 38-38 with under four minutes to play before consecutive 3-pointers from Niyal Goins and Davontrey Thomas to propel the Pioneers. Thomas had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Goins added 12 points, eight boards, four steals. Charlie Garrison led the Dutchmen with 23 points and nine rebounds, Oziah DeLoatch had 13 points for TZ, which hit only 2 of 22 from 3-point range and turned the ball over 18 times.

Dobbs Ferry 50, Blind Brook 45 OT

HIGHLIGHTS

GAME RECAP
The furious final minute of the fourth-quarter was followed by four tense overtime minutes before Dobbs Ferry locked the title, its first since 1967. Lester McCarthy put the Eagles ahead by 3 with 28 seconds to play in the fourth quarter before Ryan Aiello came down the floor and drilled a game-tying 3-pointer to force OT. In the extra session Damani Fraser scored five straight points as part of a balanced Dobbs Ferry effort. McCarthy had 15 points and four assists while Dimaunie Meredith added nine points and 12 rebounds. Zach Holzman had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles, who had 12 assists on their 16 field goals.

SECTION 1 CLASS AA GIRLS
Ossining 78, Ursuline 67

GAME RECAP
Ossining opened up a 30-11 after one quarter before Ursuline stormed back to close within three entering the fourth quarter. Aubrey Griffin capped an MVP effort by scoring 17 of her 35 points in the fourth quarter as Ossining claimed its ninth straight Section 1 championships. Griffin, a UConn commit, had 16 rebounds and four assists, three blocks and three steals. Kailah Harris had 14 points and nine rebounds and Jaida Strippoli had 12 points and eight assists. Sonia Citron led Ursuline with 29 points and 12 rebounds.

GAME RECAP
Kaleigh Bierne
hit a free throw with 3.7 seconds left to break a 44-44 tie and cap a 7-point comeback win for Tappan Zee, delivering the program its first ever Section 1 girls basketball title.

Irvington 52, Briarcliff 49

GAME RECAP
Irvington avenged their lone regular season defeat by defeating Briarcliff in the championship game for the third year in a row. Grace Thybulle posted 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win, while freshman Katie Lebuhn added 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Abby Conklin scored 11 points and Mia Mascone added nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the win. Maddie Plank scored 18 points and had seven rebounds and five assists for Briarcliff, which had two 3-point attempts in the final 10 seconds miss.

  1. Playing mount Vernon Kingston At ten am and then playing Ossining girls Monroe-Woodbury at 12 ( is like going to a restaurant and eating the main course first then eating the appetizers.just plain dumb.
