The final weekend of spring break and Sunday’s annual combine “The Opening” made for a busy couple of days for top local football underclassmen.

A couple of Stepinac offensive linemen were fortunate to be a part of both. James Prince, the Crusaders’ highly sought-after tackle, made his next stop at the University of Maryland, while Jonathan Mucciolo made an unofficial stop at Holy Cross.

Mucciolo is a 6-foot-5, 300-pounder who was selected first team All-Hudson Valley by News 12 Varsity after guiding Stepinac to a CHSFL AAA Division and New York State Catholic champioinship last season.

“I enjoyed everything about (Holy Cross),” Mucciolo said. “Their athletic facility was amazing and I was happy to hear that their graduation rate is 99-percent.”

Mucciolo made an unofficial visit to Rutgers on April 3 while also touring Temple, Monmouth, Central Connecticut and Columbia. He has also planned stops at Boston College, University of Albany, Lafayette and Fordham.

A pair of Section 1 rising seniors also made unofficial visits this past weekend. Woodlands running back/defensive back Danny Adair was among them, making a stop at Fordham.

“The campus was great and it seemed like one big family,” Adair said. “Everyone is together and they made me feel right at home — and I’m only 20 minutes away. A couple of the coaches told me they’ve been watching my film and how they want me to come to one of their prospect camps. They want to see me on the field.”

Mahopac wide receiver Rheal Allen made a visit to University of Albany on Saturday.

Prince, Mucciolo and Shawn Harris were the three Stepinac stars who represented the region at prestigious “The Opening” on Sunday afternoon. The invite-only combine is sponsored by Nike and hosted at the Atlantic Health Jets Facility. The event tours the nation and this regional featured the premier prospects in the Tri-State area.

Harris was among the event’s top performers, earning MVP honors among wide receivers for the day.

Iona Prep quarterback Derek Robertson was among the local players invited to Elite 11 Quarterback combine, which is hosted at the facility in conjunction with The Opening.

Robertson and Iona Prep tight end Sean Fleming also visited Holy Cross for its junior day on Saturday. Fleming visited Temple earlier in the week, as well.

Fleming has bulked off since the end of the football and is up to 6-foot-4, 225-pounds. He’s also visited Sacred Heart, Penn, Cornell, Monmouth and Columbia. He has scheduled visits again to Monmouht, New Hampshire, Stony Brook and Lafayette.

Two Rye Country Day standouts also made visits this past weekend. Allan Houston, wideout/defensive back, visited Holy Cross and lineman Cameron Coleman was at Princeton.

Harrison running back D’Andre Cosby spent the weekend at Yale while Huskies quarterback Frank Nannaiello was at UPenn.
