James Prince has a unique distinction that no other athlete at Stepinac can boast: he’s the only member of both of the school’s state championship football and basketball teams.

Prince, though, has an even greater distinction around the Hudson Valley this spring: The junior offensive lineman is quickly becoming the region’s hottest football recruit.

The week off from school — and following last weekend’s Class AA Federation championship victory in Glens Falls — afforded Prince time to travel south and make unofficial visits to four of the schools on his growing list of Division I programs with interest. Prince made stops at Clemson, North Carolina, N.C. State and East Carolina.

“Every college that I went to had a unique thing about them,” Prince said on Friday night. “The Clemson’s drive to be in National Championship talk. UNC’s crazy great with Jordan Brand, NC State’s underdog mentality, and East Carolina’s famous loyal fanbase.”

Prince also has interest and made unofficial trips to Temple and Penn State. He also has heavy recruitment from FCS schools including Elon and Furman — the rival of the Citadel, where his brother Deuce will enter as a freshman this fall.

“I made sure that all the places I went to has a strong academics as well as a competitive environment,” Prince said. “At the FBS or FCS level those things are really important to me. And some of the best things about this is the people you meet with each program. From the head coach to your tour guides, everyone is invested in their school 100-percent.”

Prince, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound left tackle, is coming off a dominant year at Stepinac. He was named first team by News 12 Varsity and LoHud.com after helping the Crusaders capture the Catholic state championship and the final No. 1 ranking by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

In the Class of 2019, 247Sports.com lists Prince as the No. 6 recruit in New York State and as the No. 1 offensive lineman.

Prince, a reserve on the basketball team, intends to travel to several camps and combines over the next five months before his senior season.

This past week, though, has enlightened Prince to the process and what it will take to land Division I scholarship offers.

“I know this trip has given a lot of insight into what goes into a student-athletes day and how much work they put in,” Prince said. “I’m really excited for not only myself but my teammate on the football team as many of them have or are going to visit some places as well. It just shows what being at Stepinac and winning the State title has given us.”
