Section 1 basketball semifinals headed BACK to County Center

Section 1 athletic directors are on the verge of finalizing a plan to offer school the opportunity to host the boys and girls basketball tournament semifinals at the Westchester County Center, resolving a three-month battle over the games remaining at the storied venue.

A formal announcement of the plan is expect to be made on Friday.

The semifinals for Class AA, A and B will be scheduled at the County Center from Feb. 26-28. The Section 1 championships for all classes will remain at Pace University; Class C and D on Feb. 25 and all other classes on March 2-3.

In November, the Executive Committee of Section 1 Inc. removed all postseason games from the Westchester County Center — where they’d been held in boys since 1930s and girls since 2000 — and scheduled the finals for Pace University.

That set off a firestorm of controversy and a lawsuit from the Section 1 Boys and Girls Basketball Coaches Associations. Read more about the lawsuit on LoHud.com.

Last week, the Executive Committe voted to host semifinal games at the higher seed following an Athletic Council vote against neutral sites outside of the County Center.

However, as reported on Friday, Section 1 schools have the option to host postseason games wherever they choose, as long as the higher seed handles all costs involved. A group of athletic directors organized a plan with the schools and Westchester County to use the County Center on the assigned days.

Cost for general admission to these games is $5 and for children under 12 and adults over 62, it’s $3.

According to an email sent to all Section 1 athletic directors on Thursday: “All proceeds from the game after expenses are paid will be returned to the host school” and the assurance that “There will be no cost to the individual school districts if the receipts fall short of the expenses.”

Also mentioned in the email is that the higher seeded teams expected to host semifinal games are not obligated to play at the County Center. There have been rumblings that certain schools will prefer to host semifinals in their home gym, as determined by the Executive Committee.

The Section 1 basketball tournament seeds will be released on Feb. 12 and outbracket playoff games begin on Feb. 14. Find the latest tournament seed projections here:
