Three Best Games of the Day: Thursday (2/8)

Count ’em up. There are 29 games on the Section 1 schedule for Thursday, probably the most of any day of the season, as many teams close out their regular season.

It’s arguably the most important day of the year for Boys Basketball Bracketology, which you can follow for continuous updates on KDJMedia.com. There are 20 teams that can also still win and earn Bonus Points for opponents, equating to over 350 potential points.

Several league championships will also be determined today. Find out all of the scenarios for each league here.

Below is an inside look at the top matchups and their impact on Bracketology.

Three Best Games of the Day (Thursday):

1. Clarkstown North at North Rockland, 6 p.m. The matchup, which will be broadcast to tape by Verizon Fios (I’ll be on the call), pits two teams that have been able to string together wins since early in the season. North features one of the area’s most dynamic players in Nick Ovchinnikoff, who enters averaging 20 points per game. North Rockland dominated the first meeting, 72-56, behind 17 points from John Morina. KDJ’s Pick: North Rockland

2. Scarsdale at Mount Vernon, 4:15 p.m. The last two meetings of the program have been by far the toughest tests for the reigning state champion Knights. Mount Vernon beat Scarsdale in OT for last year’s Section 1 Class AA final and pulled out a narrow road win over the Raiders last month. Scarsdale played motivated on Tuesday in a win over White Plains despite the firing of head coach Bill Murphy days earlier. While Scarsdale could be primed to make a run in the playoffs, winning at Mount Vernon here seems unlikely. Jason Douglas-Stanley is coming off 50-point effort on Saturday, breaking the school’s single-game mark. KDJ’s Pick: Mount Vernon.

3. Arlington at Mahopac, 6 p.m. The League 1-A championship all comes down to this game. Both teams enter 5-2 in league play with Mahopac dominating the first matchup on Jan. 13 and is looking for its fourth win in a row. A victory for Mahopac (9-9) also clinches a .500 record and secures Bonus Points for all opponents (they close the season vs Somers on Saturday). KDJ’s Pick: Mahopac.
